Description
This original colour pencil painting of a simply petalled flower Quadriptych began as a quick tutorial exercise in colour pencil burnishing...using repetitive/developmental sampling to show the Process utilized. A friend and I were exploring new media techniques and, when asked about which burnishing Tool I most favored, I passed along my version of Sara Batalka’s tip of burnishing pencil with pencil; I divided a 5x7 section of 140lb. CP paper and, by using a simple developmental model of the same four flowers, I developed the “finished look” of a small area.
When I returned later to the study, readying to discard it, old tapes took over and I erased the dividing lines and began to “ PLAY” with these “Daisy-like” florals that “grew” into the sun- streamed, misty backdrop of a fiddle-ferned floor. Well, the Canary yellow hues danced MAGICally with the blues d’outre-mer and d’indanthrone...and I, too, was swept away!
NOTE: Within the controversial distinction of CP “drawing” or “painting” lies artist definition. My definition: when the surface is ENTIRELY burnished, I classify as a Painting; when any exposed Paper Is part of the composition or background, I classify as a drawing. I render both. am so happy to share this Rainbow Series Painting of childlike DELIGHT.
