MEDIA CREDIT: A word to dear Conni Schaftenaar for giving me (and us all) her MASA Paper tutorial in her description. This, along with her private email tips encouraged me to order some paper and PLAY with a new adventure ( which is destined along with wax based colored pencil to allow me to pursue my Art during those months when I cannot paint with Acrylic or other resin based media I enjoy). Thank you. Conni, for your kind, gracious and generous spirit.
My first ever original mixed media experiment on bright white MASA paper began felt side up with an Assam TEA crinkle and wet dioxazine purple ACRYLIC brush stroking with an area of yellow haloed white for Light source. It was then turned onto a 140 lb. glue-and-water-slurry-washed sheet backing paper, lightly rolled and left to dry, smooth side up. The intensity of crinkle and color faded upon drying; however, interesting “ wrinkles” gave surface texture and changed the direction of the intended subject matter. I opted for a COLOR PENCIL RENDERING of lilacs growing outside my bedroom window. The branches are actually highlighted “Wrinkles” formed by the delicate rice paper being rolled with paper towel. This first attempt has taught me to leave more of the batik effects and try WATERCOLOUR on the smooth surface. Hopefully, the MASA Muse will better guide me, tomorrow! I still wish to try Tea and watercolour with perhaps a dash of acrylic or colour Pencil for the DBCS Mixed Media Contest logo, due to be uploaded tomorrow evening! YES, I am doing real time contest prep...care to join me? Let’s PLAY!!

Masa paper is a felted rice paper that one marks, crushes and soaks much like batik for interesting markings. My FAA friend, Conni Schaftenaar is a Master at it and offers amazing tutorials on her pieces. Check out her #3 Techniques Thread in our The ARTIST BUZzz Group where she has several ongoing explanations. She does wax resist work with it and creates AMAZING paintings, one of which is still on the Grand Rapids tour I believe!
