Description

This original colour pencil, moonlit floral and butterfly deconstructed still life on black vellum was rendered in exaggerated Neoclassical style for my long awaited PLAY date today! I have been mostly preoccupied with Neurographica for the past eight months, unable to tap into anything other than raw emotion. Today, I meditated to the sound of a birthday gift to myself, a Himalayan singing bowl whose endlessly held, deep note in F touched my soul. I then, picked a sheet of black vellum, selected soothing Laurelland pencil colours of purples and greens…and the result is this …exhaled…rendering from my soul! As I gaze over the composition, I see balance, beauty and my desperate need to find ELEGANCE in the darkness of recent events. No wonder French and Flemish artisans revived the dramatic classics one more time before the period of Realism would reign for a time. No surprise that opulent fabrics and design elements still command top dollar for this style which evokes adjectives like…lavish, royal, decadent, richly textured. I mis-matched stylized jasmine notes from a Christmas gifted plant from Ithaca days with pépère’s marigolds and Rick’s forget-me-nots and a butterfly for Joanne who is now in moonlight and an offside wing for my mom who is showing signs of frailty at 97…and there is BEAUTY in this night..
NOTE: While my colour pencilwork is normally categorized as “ Painting” my “en noire” studies do not completely cover the paper as a painting surface and so, because they utilize the paper in background composition, they will be labeled as “drawings”.
